kW, kVA and Ampere Converter

Convert kW, kVA and current for single- or three-phase systems using voltage and power factor.

Calculation method

The entered source quantity is converted to apparent power, active power and current with a phase factor of √3 for three-phase and 1 for single-phase.

Formulas used

  • kVA = kW / cosφ; kW = kVA × cosφ
  • I = kVA × 1,000 / (phase factor × V)

Worked example

Example: 100 kW at cosφ 0.8 equals 125 kVA; at 400 V three-phase this is about 180 A.

How to interpret the result

Conversions are simultaneous steady-state values. They do not include efficiency unless already reflected in the entered power.

Common mistakes

  • Using phase voltage in the three-phase line-voltage field.
  • Omitting the actual power factor.

Scope and limitations

  • Unbalance, harmonics and transient current are outside this conversion.

Frequently asked questions

How many amps is 100 kVA at 400 V?

Approximately 144 A for a balanced three-phase system.

Does kVA conversion require efficiency?

No when converting electrical input quantities; include efficiency separately when starting from useful mechanical output.

Is power factor used for current from kVA?

No. kVA already represents apparent power; power factor is used to relate kVA and kW.
