Calculation method

The selected output determines which compatible input pair or triplet is used. The engine does not infer missing quantities beyond the displayed balanced three-phase relationships.

Formulas used

  • P = √3 × V × I × cosφ / 1,000; S = √3 × V × I / 1,000
  • Q = √(S² − P²); cosφ = P / S

Worked example

Example: 400 V, 180 A and cosφ 0.85 give about 106 kW in a balanced three-phase system.

How to interpret the result

Check whether the displayed value is kW, kVA, kvar, A, V or a unitless power factor before using it downstream.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing line-to-line and phase voltage.
  • Treating kW and kVA as identical.

Scope and limitations

  • The formulas assume a balanced sinusoidal three-phase system.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between kW and kVA?

kW is active power; kVA is apparent power. Power factor relates them.

Why does √3 appear?

It relates line quantities to total power in a balanced three-phase system.

Can kvar be calculated if kW exceeds kVA?

No. That combination is physically inconsistent and the result is withheld.
