Formula and scope

Operating time = planned time − downtime. Availability = operating / planned. Performance = ideal cycle × total count / operating time. Quality = good / total. OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality.

Results use only visible inputs. OEE thresholds are configurable references, never universal standards. Downtime costs are scenario estimates, not accounting measurements; avoid adding a cost already included in the unit value or contribution margin.

OEE Calculator – Availability, Performance and Quality

Calculate OEE and its three loss components from planned time, downtime, ideal cycle and production counts.

Calculation method

Operating time is planned time minus downtime. Availability, performance and quality are calculated independently, then multiplied. Optional target inputs create a traceable potential state.

Formulas used

  • Availability = operating time / planned time
  • Performance = ideal cycle × total count / operating time
  • Quality = good count / total count; OEE = A × P × Q

Worked example

Example: 420 operating minutes from 480 planned, 700 units at 30 s ideal cycle and 665 good units gives about 69.3% OEE.

How to interpret the result

Read the three components before the total: the lowest component identifies the dominant modeled loss. Reference thresholds remain configurable, not universal.

Common mistakes

  • Including planned shutdowns inconsistently.
  • Confusing total count with good count.
  • Using an unverified ideal cycle.

  • Use one consistent observation boundary and validated production or maintenance records.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good OEE?

It depends on process, product mix and scope. Compare like-for-like periods and use the configurable references as context, not a universal standard.

Can performance exceed 100%?

It can appear so when ideal cycle or counts are inconsistent; the tool warns instead of silently capping it.

Does OEE include planned time?

This calculator uses the entered planned production time as its denominator.
