Takt time is the production rhythm required to satisfy the entered demand within net available time.

Formula and scope

Takt time = net available production time / customer demand. It is the required production rhythm, not the measured machine cycle.

Results use only visible inputs. OEE thresholds are configurable references, never universal standards. Downtime costs are scenario estimates, not accounting measurements; avoid adding a cost already included in the unit value or contribution margin.

Takt Time Calculator

Calculate the production rhythm required to satisfy demand within net available production time.

Calculation method

Net available time is converted to seconds and divided by customer demand. The reciprocal is also shown as required units per hour.

Formulas used

  • Takt time = net available time / demand
  • Required rate = 3,600 / takt seconds

Worked example

Example: 450 minutes for 900 units gives 30 s/unit and 120 units/h.

How to interpret the result

Takt is required demand rhythm, not measured machine speed. Compare it with cycle time to assess capacity.

Common mistakes

  • Using gross shift time instead of net available time.
  • Confusing takt with cycle time.

Scope and limitations

  • Product mix, variability, buffers and line balance are not modeled.
