Water Storage Sizing

Estimate usable and nominal storage from demand, autonomy and visible reserve.
USER INPUT

Calculation inputs

Saved locally

Empty fields are never replaced with invented agronomic values. Results update only from visible data.

METHOD / TRACEABILITY

Visible formulas and assumptions

Volume utile = besoin journalier × autonomie | Volume nominal = utile ÷ (1 − réserve)
  • The entered reserve is treated as unavailable nominal volume.
  • Then verify the source’s actual availability cycle.

Irrigation Water Storage Calculator

Estimate usable and nominal storage from daily demand, autonomy and the reserve that must remain unavailable.

Calculation method

Daily demand multiplied by autonomy gives usable storage. The reserve fraction then converts usable capacity to nominal tank or basin volume.

Formulas used

  • Usable storage = daily demand × autonomy
  • Nominal storage = usable storage / (1 − reserve fraction)

Worked example

37.5 m³/day for two days gives 75 m³ usable; with 20% reserve, nominal storage is 93.75 m³.

How to interpret the result

Compare nominal requirement with existing usable geometry and source refill capacity, not only the nameplate tank volume.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the reserve percentage instead of dividing by the usable fraction.
  • Ignoring dead volume and freeboard.
  • Sizing without source refill rate.

Scope and limitations

  • Evaporation, sediment, emergency fire reserve and structural design are outside this preliminary volume calculation.

Frequently asked questions

What does autonomy mean?

It is the number of demand days the usable stored water must cover without replenishment.

Why include a reserve?

A reserve represents unavailable or intentionally retained volume and makes nominal capacity explicit.

Does the result size the structure?

No. Structural, geotechnical, lining, overflow and safety design remain separate.
